Board Certified in Commercial Real Estate Law and Residential
Real Estate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization
John is
a native Texan, having grown up in Fort Worth and settled in Houston
after spending 6 years in Austin obtaining B.B.A. and J.D. degrees.
John started his career as a trial attorney but redirected his practice
to income and estate taxation. One of John's clients was a real estate
developer, so John learned how to handle real estate transactions,
which currently constitute the majority of his practice. Because
of this unique combination of tax and real estate law, John was asked
to assist a client who was sponsoring a low-income housing project,
involving Section 42 IRC. John established a reputation in this area
of affordable housing, and handles a number of such transactions
each year, for both for-profit developers and non-profit sponsors/developers.
John is married to Sue Strube Cochran and has four children and
four grandchildren, all of whom live in Houston, and bring much joy
to him and Sue.
John is very active in his Church and his community. He is an elder
of his Church, as well as its counsel. He is past President of Houston
Habitat for Humanity and currently serves as board member and Secretary
of Texas Dragon Boat Association, and board member and President
of Covenant Community Capital Corporation. John is an avid golfer,
and plays at the Houston Country Club, where he is past President
and board member.
